SAN DIEGO- Next month, San Diego plays host to the second round of the World Baseball Classic (WBC). The international baseball tournament will begin it’s fourth instalment early next month. 16 countries from 5 continents will be represented during the WBC.
Seven players from the Padres organization will represent 4 countries. Third baseman Yangervis Solarte, right-handed pitcher Jhoulys Chacin and infielder Jose Castillo will represent Venezuela. First baseman Josh Naylor and Padres No. 4 prospect and utility man Jamie Romak will play for Canada. Carlos Fisher And Bryan Rodrigues will both see time pitching for Mexico and the Dominican republic, respectively.
“The World Baseball Classic highlights the diversity and global appeal of our game, and it’s an honor for the San Diego/Tijuana region to once again host the second round,” Padres president Mike Dee said.
If the countries represented by these seven Padres players make it to the second round at Petco Park March 14-19, fans and players alike can look forward to some familiar faces and home field advantage.
