PEORIA, Ariz. – The words “pitchers and catchers report” mean something a little different for Padres catcher Christian Bethancourt. As spring training gets underway, Bethancourt will see time both behind the plate and on the mound.
The 25-year-old began his transition to pitching during the Panamanian Winter League a few months ago.
“It’s still a working process,” said Bethancourt to AJ Cassavell of MLB.com. “The first few days I’m going to be doing catching drills, and then the third day, I’ll be doing pitching stuff. After that, we’re going to see how it works, see how it feels.”
While his main role is serving as the team’s backup catcher, Betancourt may see some time throwing in relief this season. While his off-speed pitches and mechanics during the Panamanian Winter League were sloppy, his fastball sat in the mid-to-upper 90s, so the Padres may throw him into the mix sometime this season.
