PEORIA, Ariz.- It’s a refreshing feeling seeing numbers go up on a scoreboard at a ball park this time of year. What isn’t refreshing, is seeing all the numbers go next to your opponents name.
That was the case for the Padres in Saturday’s Cactus League opener at the Peoria Sports Complex. The Padres lost to the Mariners in a decisive 13-3 fashion.
The Mariners were on the board in the first inning after a Nelson Cruz three run home run and continued to find momentum throughout the game.
As for the Padres, their only sign of light came in the bottom of the fourth inning. Jonathan Goehring of Friars on Base reports “The only highlights of the afternoon were with San Diego at the plate in the bottom of the fourth. The rally was highlighted by a Hunter Renfroe RBI double which drove in Wil Myers. Renfroe then scored on a Yangervis Solarte groundout. With the bases empty, outfielder Travis Jankowski then homered over the right center field wall.”
While, Saturday’s game was was not an enjoyable one for Padres fans, baseball is back regardless, and the Friars get another swing at things Sunday at 12:10 against the Mariners.
