Reds preseason weekend brings two losses

GOODYEAR, Ariz. – The Cincinnati Reds lost 4-6 to the Giants on Friday Feb. 24 in the Cactus League opener, followed by a 2-8 loss to the Indians in the Ohio Cup on Saturday Feb. 25.

In Scottsdale Stadium on Friday, Sal Romano, Reds prospect and roster candidate, pitched two scoreless innings. Romano allowed one hit with two walks and four strikeouts.

In Goodyear Ballpark on Saturday, Reds veteran first baseman Joey Votto went 0-for-3 in his spring debut. In the third, Votto had his best play of the game. Outfielder Bradley Zimmer sent a pitch up the first-base line, then Votto dove to his left to catch the ball and flipped it to pitcher Jumbo Diaz for the out.

Saturday’s game was unexpectedly delayed when sprinklers on the field turned on without warning.  Reds Manager Bryan Price told Dayton Daily News it was not the first time the sprinkler system had activated unexpectedly and interrupted a preseason game.
