MESA, Ariz – After dropping its first two opening games, the athletics have won two straight after a Tuesday afternoon victory over the Cleveland Indians.
A’s corner infield prospect Rangel Ravelo’s homer in the eighth inning gave the team a 5-4 lead over the defending American League champions. The green and gold also had two other home runs on the day from infielders Marcus Semien and Trevor Plouffe.
The A’s also had a solid showing on the other side of the plate as well. Young pitching prospects Jharel Cotton and A.J. Puk both made their Cactus League debuts.
Cotton struck out four batters in two innings of work and didn’t allow a hit but gave up one run on a wild pitch. Puk, the A’s number one pitching prospect, struck out the side in his one inning showing for the club.
A’s right-hander Andrew Triggs gave up one unearned run, two hits, and surrendered no walks. Triggs is fighting for the fifth spot in the teams pitching rotation.
The Athletics are now 2-2 through their first four games and take on the Padres on Wednesday at Peoria Sports Complex. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:05 p.m. A’s ace Sonny Gray is expected to make his 2017 Cactus League debut.
