TEMPE, Ariz. – Not all news in this spring training city revolves around baseball. In fact, there’s a lot more happening in this small Arizona town than the average Angels fan may believe.
Just this past Tuesday a boat carrying nearly a dozen people capsized on Tempe Town Lake.
According to the Tempe Fire Department, all 18 of the special needs young adults were able to return to shore safely. All passengers on board the boat were wearing life jackets, said police.
According to ABC15 Arizona, a spectator witnessed the group of individuals in the water. He didn’t think twice about it, and knew exactly what he had to do to help save them.
“We heard the call and we all pulled in our paddles and pulled in another boat and we headed there to rescue them,” he explains.
The group was from the Arizona Disabled Athletes organization.
Some were experiencing signs of hypothermia from being in the water for nearly 10 minutes. However, there were no major injuries, and no one was taken to the hospital.
