PEORIA, Ariz.- Padres manager Andy Green is frustrated with team Venezuela’s lack of use of infielder Yangervis Solarte during the World Baseball Classic.
According to an AP story posted on ESPN, Green said, “The only frustrating part about the WBC is when you send one of your best players, and they function just as a pinch runner. That’s not exactly how you want to see your players utilized at this point in time in spring training.”
During this point in spring training, players like Solarte, who will have a large role to play on the Padres roster hitting close to the top of the order, hope to be in game ready shape by now.
Green told AP Solarte will have to get back into game shape when he returns to camp.
“He’s going to play with his country until the end and I hope it goes well for him, but he’s not getting a lot of opportunity there,” Green said.
Green said he respects the decisions of Venezuela manager and MLB great Omar Vizquel, but is frustrated with the way Solarte has been used, getting just one at-bat, appearing in three games and scoring two runs.
