GOODYEAR, Ariz.— In the Cincinnati Reds spring training game against Texas on March 20, pitcher Bronson Arroyo was hit in the face by a catcher’s throw on a stolen base attempt.
The 40-year-old Arroyo was hit by Reds catcher Devin Mesoraco attempting to throw out Drew Robinson at second base. Arroyo stayed on his feet and talked to Reds trainer Steve Bauman for several minutes before leaving to be examined by a doctor in the clubhouse.
Arroyo was then taken to the Reds’ complex a mile away to practice throwing for a while. According to Fox Sports, Arroyo said he didn’t expect to miss a start.
Arroyo, who missed 2 1/2 years due to elbow and shoulder injuries, attempted to make a comeback with the Reds this season. He pitched 1 2/3 innings in his second Cactus League start before getting injured.
