PEORIA, Ariz. — An emergency appendectomy will cause Mariners utility man Shawn O’Malley to be out for two weeks.
The surgery was completed Tuesday after O’Malley said he had stomach cramps, and he was released on an outpatient basis. On Wednesday he said he felt “fine” and planned out his rehab schedule.
Before the surgery, O’Malley had been hitting .278 at 10-36 through 16 spring training games. His sidelining clears the way for an active roster spot for fellow utility man Taylor Motter.
“It’s too bad,” manager Scott Servais said to Bob Dutton of The News Tribune. “Timing is everything in this game. When stuff happens that’s obviously out of your control, you take care of it. Go from there.”
