SARASOTA, Fla.- Right-handed pitcher Kevin Gausman has been named the starter for the Orioles’ opening day, says Orioles’ manager Buck Showalter.
Gausman became the choice after persistent shoulder injuries kept fellow right-handed pitcher Chris Tillman on the disabled list for the beginning of the season, said Showalter to Baltimore Sun reporter Jon Meoli.
“I’ve had some guys to pick from, I just thought Kevin was best equipped in a lot of different areas,” Showalter said to Baltimore Sun reporter Eduardo Encina.
Gausman has been with the Orioles since the 2013 season after being bumped up from the Bowie Baysox
Gausman has preformed remarkably in spring training, pitching a consistent 1.80 ERA in two Grapefruit leagues. The Orioles have been developing him for years to beef up his MLB resume.
Gausman will pitch the opening game against the Toronto Blue Jays on April 3, at Camden Yards.
