JUPITER, Fla.- For the first time since 1997, the St. Louis Cardinals reached a 20-win season with their victory over Washington in the Grapefruit League.
Coming with the last preseason game, the Cardinals have the best record in the National League at 20-8-4. In their last 10 games, they have finished 8-1-1, and were 12-2-2 at home overall in the spring.
Rick Hummel of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported on general manager Mike Matheny assessing his team’s play this spring. In regards to fundamentals and defense, Matheny said, “It was a nice step forward in a lot of areas. I saw it with our veteran players and I saw it with the young guys we gave opportunities to. Just very consistent.”
The Cardinals have two spring games left at Memphis and Springfield Thursday and Friday, neither which count in the Grapefruit League Standings. The Cardinals play the Chicago Cubs for Opening Day on April 2.
