Chris Coghlan: Defining what it means to be an angel in the outfield

CLEARWATER, Fla – Major league outfielder Chris Coghlan is an athlete by nature, but he is an angel by practice.

Chris Coghlan’s grandparents, Aline and Phil, of Williamsburg, VA, speak highly of their grandson and with good reason.

Fans dedication runs deep

There wouldn’t be a baseball game without loyal fans cheering the team on to victory.  Major League Baseball has some of the best fans in sports who are dedicated to the game, players, and go all-out when preparing to attend a game.

Nicole Cahill, a Florida resident and both Miami Marlins and Washington Nationals fan, has been to multiple games and her goal is to hit all 30 ballparks. So far, she’s been to the Miami Marlins, Tampa Bay Rays, Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates, Cleveland Indians, New York Yankees, New York Mets, Washington Nationals and Atlanta Braves.

“My favorite ball park was Wrigley Field. I literally cried walking up the steps to the bleachers in right-center field,” Cahill said. Continue reading “Fans dedication runs deep”

Bring back Mariano Rivera for Opening Day pitch

Texas Rangers v New York Yankees, Game 5

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. – If I had to pick anyone to throw the Opening Day first pitch, I would want it to be Mariano Rivera, retired pitcher for the New York Yankees and 13-time All Star, five-time World Series winner.

I grew up in a family filled with Yankees fans and attended at least five Yankees games, all of them when Rivera was still pitching for the Yankees. Rivera resides in New Rochelle, a town in my county and has a car dealership, Rivera Toyota Scion dealership, where my uncle has seen him. He used to have a restaurant, Mo’s New York Grill, but it’s closed.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Rivera was a key contributor to the Yankees’ success. He won five American League Rolaids Relief Man Awards and three Delivery Man of the Year Awards, and also finished in the top three in voting for the AL Cy Young Award four times.  Continue reading “Bring back Mariano Rivera for Opening Day pitch”

Giving remembrance with the first pitch in Miami

MIAMI, Fla.–With opening day inching closer and closer some people always wonder who is going be throwing out that ceremonial first pitch for their favorite team this year.

For the Marlins though is it hard to pick just one famous person that was born in Miami because they`re are so many of them.  So it would just be easier to pick someone that was once with in the Marlins organization.

When picking someone with in the organization you want to make sure that you pick someone that everyone there is going to know.  The Marlins have only been around sense 1993 so it does not leave them with an over whelming pool of past greats to chose from. Then I thought of something that had happened last September that had broke the hearts of so many people around the sports world.

That was the death of the Marlins star pitcher Jose Fernandez who had lost his life in a boating accident.  He was known and loved by all Marlins fans, many people in Miami thought that he was going to be a for sure hall of famer.  With his death he left behind his loving mother Maritza and wife Alejandra.  So if I was going to pick someone to throw out the opening day pitch for the Marlins I would pick them to do it.  Family meant a lot to Jose, his wife and him were very close to his mother.  So by letting Maritza and Alejandra throw out the opening day pitch for the Marlins it would not just be a way of honoring them but also honoring the Jose Fernandez.

Breon throws historical opening pitch

Fraser Breon, a sophomore Journalism/ Mass Communications major at St. Bonaventure University and staff member of this blog, threw one of the most historical home opening pitches of all time for the Atlanta Braves this season.game of thrones dragon.gif

Gallivanting to the mound, her tamed fire-breathing dragon placed Fraser into position. They threw a fireball pitch that shot into the catchers hands with a sizzle.

The dragon flew over the crowd spreading confetti throughout the stands as the masses shouted and chanted.

On their exit, the dragon lit off some preliminary fireworks to get the crowd settled and ready to “play ball!”
